Sequence CEO proud of 100% ‘Good’ or above ratings from the Care Quality Commission.

The Sequence service at Birchwood House, Newham, has just received the final report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection visit back in January. Once again, it has been rated as ‘Good’ by the Inspectors.

‘We take great pride in our achievements here at Sequence and I’d just like to publicly say ‘thanks and well done’ to all my colleagues involved in achieving this result,’ said Tony Hegarty (Sequence Group CEO). ‘We know it’s increasingly hard to achieve ‘Good’ ratings from CQC and are delighted that the excellent outcomes for service users are reflected in the consistency of our CQC ratings’.

Sequence completed the purchase of Liaise Loddon in December 2019 and now manages 32 services- all of which are rated ‘Good’ or above by the experts at the Care Quality Commission.

‘We work hard to make people’s lives as rich as they can be and, like everyone else, we’ve had to adapt to the world as it’s changed around us. We have one service rated as ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC and we are really proud of that but it’s not enough for us- we’re striving to be outstanding in all our services.’

‘Sequence has an open culture which is about learning from mistakes. Of course, we’ve got a fantastic quality infrastructure but without a great, open culture we wouldn’t be able to achieve what we have at Birchwood and across the Group.’

Sequence is believed to be the largest provider of learning disability services in the UK which has all services rated ‘Good’ or above by the Care Quality Commission’.

Liaise Loddon Ltd are celebrating maintaining ‘Outstanding’ CQC rating

Liaise Loddon are celebrating after one of their homes in Basingstoke – Sansa House – was rated overall outstanding for the second time by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) on our standard of care. Less than 5% of care homes are given this rating by CQC.

Sansa House is a lovely residential home which provides accommodation and personal care for five very special young people who are supported with complex needs, including learning disabilities and autism.

Director of Care Cathie Wyatt said “We are thrilled to have received an overall outstanding rating for the second time.  This reflects the hard work of the incredible people who work here. They receive extensive training and we are delighted that their dedication has been recognised.  Cedrina Edmonds, registered manager for Sansa House has been with the company for a number of years and recently took over the management of the home.  She is supported by a wonderful team including the area manager Alexandra Moldrzykova, and I couldn’t be prouder of maintaining our outstanding rating“

The inspection was unannounced and took place on the 16th January 2020 – CQC rated Sansa House as Outstanding in the areas of Effective and Caring, and Good in the areas of being Well Led, Safe, and Responsive, giving an overall rating of Outstanding.

CQC described the service as exceptionally caring.  People consistently valued their relationships with the staff team and felt that they often went ‘the extra mile’ for them. Staff were highly motivated and inspired to offer care that was kind and compassionate and were exceptionally creative at promoting people’s independence.  They also felt that promoting dignity and independence was at the heart of the service’s values and was reflected in the approach and focus of all staff in how they worked with people. People were valued as individuals and their qualities and achievements were celebrated. People were treated with exceptional kindness and compassion. Staff were gentle, patient, and cheerful which visibly lifted people’s moods. There was a visible positive, person-centred culture and staff adapted their approach, body language and tone of voice to each individual. Staff demonstrated a genuine empathy for people and passion for their job. One professional that CQC spoke to as part of the inspection said “We all feel as a team that the staff we have met need to be copied and placed in other services as role models as they are simply outstanding! They show they have good leadership and trust from the managers in order to achieve this.”

The inspector said that people, relatives and staff consistently described the registered manager as outstanding and inspirational, due to their unswerving loyalty, commitment and dedication to the people living at Sansa House. People received a high standard of care because the management team led by example and set high expectations of staff about the quality of care people should receive. The registered manager was determined that people living at Sansa House should receive quality care based on recommended and up to date best practice. The registered manager consistently recognised, encouraged and implemented innovative ideas and strategies to drive a good quality service.

Liaise Loddon provides small, friendly, community-based homes to adults with severe learning difficulties, usually associated with autism. We give the people we support the power to take as much control as they can to live happy and fulfilling lives.

Letter from Professor Martin Green OBE

Professor Martin Green OBE, CEO of Care England has sent out the letter below stating that social care is open for business but that it needs help and support.

He is absolutely right!  Our homes are open 365 days per year, 24 hours per day.

 

Now, more than ever, we need enthusiastic, dedicated people to work with our very special adults.  You do not necessarily need any experience, just the right attitude and the  desire to really make a difference to peoples lives.  Liaise Loddon is proud to be accredited as an Investor in People organisation. We strive to ensure the provision of great quality training for all of our co-workers at every level.

On joining, co-workers receive a thorough induction in the home, which is supported by training room sessions and a comprehensive induction folder. In addition, we develop the skills and knowledge to support the individuals in our homes through a range of topics including: autism, recording keeping & confidentiality, safeguarding and first aid to name but a few. All of which support completion of the Care Certificate or Management Induction Standards depending on the role.


Once probation is successfully completed, co-workers can then complete a number of qualifications in a wide range of subjects from Person Centred Care through to a Certificate in Health and Social Care.

Change of Ownership

Liaise Loddon was founded in 1995 by Tim and Marion Cornick, extending on the work of The Loddon School and PROACT-SCIPr-UK®, to provide high quality, personalised support to adults with complex needs who, back then, really had few options.

Over the years, the organisation has grown from just one house to the many that we have now, supporting 49 people who have flourished within the amazing culture that all our co-workers enable.

However, Marion and her family felt that the time had come where, for the company to continue to grow, it needed to be part of a wider group. Hence, they made the decision to sell the company to Sequence Care Group who they feel share the same values and vision for the future.

Sequence Care Group own a portfolio of care homes throughout London and the home counties, providing residential and supported living services for adults with complex and varied needs that include autism and mental health. They also own Progress Housing based in West Sussex and have recently acquired Coppice Care. The acquisition of Liaise homes expands the Group’s collection of care homes into Hampshire and secures the future of our service users and co-workers.

The sale was finalised in December 2019 and therefore, both Marion Cornick (former Chair of Board of Directors) and Deborah Cornick (former Managing Director) have stepped down from their roles and no longer work within the business.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to the new Board members; Tony Hegarty, David Burke and Robert Dalrymple in their roles of Chief Operating Officer, Chief Finance Officer and Business Development Director respectively.

Sequence Care share our values and passion for supporting adults with high quality services, and we see this as an exciting development for the future of Liaise.  Being part of a larger group will provide us with many advantages and we look forward to planning the future under our new ownership.

Special Christmas delivery!

In the last three years, Thomas who lives in one of our homes  has been to every Varsity Pro Wrestling show (VPW) which has come to Basingstoke to see his favourite wrestler ‘Ruthless’ Rob Holte and always waits after shows to congratulate the Basingstoke-born grappler, win or lose.

As a festive surprise, Mr Holte visited Thomas on December 21 to give him an early Christmas present. As soon as the wrestler walked through the door, Thomas’ face lit up and he ran over to give his hero a big hug.

After a tour of the home, Mr Holte presented him with a one-of-a-kind t-shirt which no one else in the world currently has.

The Basingstoke Gazette were also there to report on the event and Mr Holte said to them: “As entertainers we are nothing without our fans so be able to give something back is great.  Just seeing the look on Thomas’ face when I walked through the door was incredible and it makes you feel like what we do is worth it.”

The surprise was arranged by deputy manager of the house, Ian Wallis, who attends all of the VPW shows with Thomas.

Ian said: “The whole thing came about by chance when I bumped into Rob at Morrisons. We got talking as I said that Thomas was looking forward to the next show. One thing led to another and he said he would come and surprise Thomas. “The whole experience has just been incredible for him [Thomas] and you can just see how happy it has made him.”

Ian said since going to the wrestling, Thomas has been inspired by his hero and has started going to the gym. He has lost 10lbs in four weeks.  Throughout the tour, Thomas said he wanted to join Mr Holte in the ring to fight his foe Warren Brady.

When asked why Holte was his favourite, Thomas said: “Because he is from Basingstoke, he’s the pride of Basingstoke.  I want to say a big thank you to Rob for coming to see me.”

Co-worker achievements celebrated

Over 250 of our co-workers were recognised for their outstanding achievements on Friday 16 November 2018 at our annual awards evening, held this year at Novotel Southampton.

The team were presented with awards for outstanding achievements by guest presenters including Stephanie Regular, NatWest Assistant Relationship Manager (North Hampshire CBC), Graham Stead, Client Relationship Director of CMI (IT service providers), Paul Temple from Basingstoke & Deane Rotary Club and Director at Basingstoke Gymnastics Club, and Michelle Payne, Area Manager, South West Adult Services – National Autistic Society.

Our founder and Chair of Directors, Marion Cornick MBE opened the evening by thanking everyone for their contribution to making the company so successful in the important work they do supporting some of the most vulnerable individuals in the community.

Addressing the co-workers at the awards, Marion Cornick MBE said: “We couldn’t do any of what we do without the amazing dedication and support of all of you.  Thank you for everything you do, and keep up the excellent work”.

Marion also presented her daughter, Deborah Cornick, Managing Director with a special Business Development Award.  Presenting the award, Marion said “When my husband Tim passed away in 2001, Deborah gave up her career to help me run the business.  Under her guidance we have grown the company to the current 11 homes that we have and are now a major employer with over 260 people working for us.  This is to say thank you for everything Deborah has done and continues to do for the business”.

Deborah added her thanks to the room saying “This is our opportunity to thank all of you for doing such an amazing job in the homes and offices all year.  We really appreciate everything you do.  And of course, we mustn’t forget those co-workers who couldn’t join us this evening for one reason or another – particularly those who are working caring for our very special people“.

A number of awards were presented on the night including Best Newcomer and Making a Positive Change, but sweeping the board for yet another year with an impressive three awards was Basingstoke Shift Leader, Martha Amaazee who won in three categories all focused on excellence in delivering personalised support.

The winners of the Teamwork award were ‘Applelea’, one of the Basingstoke homes.  They were presented their award by our Positive Support Director Henrik Holgersen who said “This year Applelea underwent a large redesign and build project making the environment even more bespoke to the needs of the people who live there. Throughout the build the team remained positive and did an outstanding job supporting the service users ensuring any disruption to their lives were well managed. The team also put a lot of work into preparing the service users for their new environment.

With the manager, the team worked very hard to prepare for their 2-day long CQC inspection which earned them a well-deserved excellent report, more evidence, as if it were needed, of the great team effort at Applelea.

Chair of Directors, Marion Cornick also presented a donation to Bone Cancer Research and Oxford Hospital charities.  Graham Stead who accepted the donation on behalf of the charities said: ”This is a cause that I am personally involved with raising funds for and we are very grateful for the donation which will be put to good use.  75% goes to Bone Cancer Research where the money is used to fund research, provide guidance and support to those impacted by Bone Cancer, and to raise awareness of the disease and its symptoms.  25% goes to The Oxford Hospitals Charity, who are are very directly using the fundraising to help with care on Kamrans Ward – the childrens cancer ward. They are replacing the monitoring systems that are used to care for the kids. Each new monitor costs about £5,000 and is a significant improvement on existing monitoring equipment. So far, we have raised £95,000 for the two charities in total, including Gift Aid, so the 25% for Kamrans is nearly £25,000 which has fully paid for 5 of these monitors; nearly half of the number required to fully re-kit Kamrans!”.

We continue to grow

Last year we excelled in our CQC inspections with 3 of our homes receiving ratings placing us in the top 6% of homes in the country.  Not content to rest on our laurels, we have opened a brand-new service in Tadley (near Basingstoke).

The building has been undergoing significant renovation work since Summer 2017, transforming the ex-NHS day centre into 6 fantastic self-contained apartments as well as a large communal kitchen and dining room, and a staff room.  Each boasts plenty of space as well as many innovative solutions to issues often faced by providers supporting people with Autism and Learning Disabilities.

A competition was held amongst our co-workers to name the new home and the winner – Albertinah Malambo – was chosen by the Chair of Directors, Marion Cornick MBE and Area Manager, Paul Smithson.  The name that Albertinah suggested for the home was Karibu (Swahili for ‘welcome’) Place.

With Karibu Place’s opening, we have expanded the total number of people we support from 43 to 49, and of course the highly-skilled teams who work with them, which, in addition to day and night support workers, will mean we will need senior staff as well.

This will mean we will increase the number of people we employ to around 280 across Basingstoke and Romsey. Most of these are skilled support workers and specialists in supporting people with learning disabilities and autism.

Sansa House is a residential home which provides accommodation and personal care for up to five very special young people who are supported with complex needs, including learning disabilities and autism.

Managing Director Deborah Cornick said: “We are absolutely delighted with this fantastic achievement. It is well deserved after all the work that the teams have put in. I couldn’t be more pleased and proud of our outstanding rating.”

The inspector said that the registered manager consistently recognised, encouraged and implemented innovative ideas and strategies to drive a good quality service.  The service worked in partnership with other organisations to make sure they were following current best practice and providing a high-quality service.
